Remember that john Marshall was the Chief Justice of Marbury v Madison and established judicial review. He also thought the constitution granted the federal government with many powers whereas Jefferson viewed it as the complete opposite. John Marshall was known for extending the power of the federal government while Jefferson wanted to restrict it and reserve more powers to the states.
