Since Chris is now able to control his emotions and behavior compared to when he was younger, he is learning self-regulation. This means that Chris is now able to act more maturely and act according to his situation. Moreover, self-regulation is when you act according to your values and beliefs.

For Douglass, to finally being able to read and comprehend the facts on slavery sometimes made him more miserable. He stated that: “I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing.”
