Why does facilitated diffusion happen:

~ It regulates what goes in and what goes out of the cell

~The cell membrane is permeable to only a select few types of molecules and the molecules that are allowed to move across the cell membrane must be non-polar molecules which are small in size

What direction the particles diffuse in:

~From one side of the membrane where the substrate concentration is high to the other side of the membrane where the concentration is lower

~Diffuses across membranes down the concentration gradient

The molecules that help in this process:

~carbohydrates, amino acids, nucleosides, and ions
