A macromolecule, such as a protein, is a very large molecule. They are made up of thousands of atoms that are covalently bound. Many macromolecules are polymers of monomers, which are smaller molecules. Biopolymers (nucleic acids, proteins, and carbohydrates) and huge non-polymeric molecules like lipids, nanogels, and macrocycles are the most prevalent macromolecules in biochemistry. Macromolecules include synthetic fibers and experimental materials such as carbon nanotubes.
