This applies to many events that have happened in real life. It's not fair because actions don't usually define the person. They can be impulsive, under influence, or pressured.
Some one who disagrees with the statement would say that a person deserves the consequences that came with their decisions. That people should always look at all possible consequences before making a decision and if they didn't, they should suffer for it.
