The answer for this is because of the recourses. There is a lot of food (seafood) and materials to be able to live life in and flourish in. Its actually pretty cool.

It is because of the resources around them. There is drinking water (you can turn salt water into fresh water) There is plenty of food near them, fish and such, most of the time there is also trees and fertile land to grow crops
