The first few Native Americans to join the war chose to help the the patriots. Some other Native Americans joined the British side and fought to defeat the American invasion of Canada. The British had an advantage when convincing the Native Americans to join them: While the colonists were eager to spread westward and discover other places, the British policies before the war had tried to limit the encroachment of white settlers onto Native lands.
