In the South, white schools had only white pupils and teachers, while black schools had only black teachers and black students.

But state-sponsored segregation also existed in the North, and thousands of people joined in civil rights movements outside the South, from New York City to Boston to Detroit.

In the United States, the only reason slavery was abolished was the Civil War, since up to this conflict the Southern states had refused to limit their ability to use slaves for labor. This led to a major division within society--since the almost the entirely of the population in the North was opposed to slavery.
