Which equation describes the function shown on the graph?

Mathematics

Answer:

The answer is B.

Step-by-step explanation:

Recall that lines are one of the three undefined terms in geometry, the other two being points and planes. If I had two, I would describe it as a "one-dimensional figure infinitely pointing in both of its directions", but that definition in itself is hard to grasp.

The good thing about undefined terms, though, are that they're easy to describe. Specifically, lines have two key attributes: the slope and the y-intercept.

Slope is "a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of [a] line". It's denoted by <em>m</em>, and it's usually called "rise over run" because slope is also the relationship between the vertical compoenent <em>y</em> and the horizontal component <em>x.</em>

<em />

The y-intercept is "the point where [a] line intercects the y-axis". Plain and simple. It also describes the position of a line, and it is denoted by <em>b</em>.

So, we know what slope and the y-intercept are, but how does this help us solve the problem?

Well, we are provided a graph, so let's make sense of the problem.

A line is defined by the slope and the y-intercept, which is why we always write the equation in slope-intercept form (y = mx + b). But this must mean a line must have a unique <em>m</em> and <em>b</em> as well!

So, let's start with <em>b</em> (the y-intercept). The line intersects the y-axis where the 2 margin is, so I can already say that the y-intercept is (0,2). We already have one piece of the puzzle filled: y = mx + 2. We can already rule out A and D.

Now let's find <em>m. </em>Remember that slope is "rise over run". Also, two points can always form a line. This means that at one point, I can move both vertically and horizontally to the next point of the line and use that to write the slope! So let's do that.

From the y-intercept (0, 2), I can move -1 units up and 5 units right to reach the next point on the line, (5,1). For simplicity's sake, we'll just say that rise is y, run is x, and m = y/x. This means that m = -1/5, which is our slope. We can rule out C.

Therefore, our answer is B.

1. What would the value of the inverse of f(x) be if x=27? *
lara31 [8.8K]

Answer:

Y = 1/27x

Step-by-step explanation:

In order to find the inverse we switch places with x and y to get x = y27. In order to even out the equation, we divide both sides by 27 to get our answer. The answer would be y = x/27 or  y = (1/27)x.

Apologies if I'm incorrect.

Is x+y+1=0 a tangent of both y^2=4x and x^2=4y parabolas?
Lubov Fominskaja [6]

Answer:

  yes

Step-by-step explanation:

The line intersects each parabola in one point, so is tangent to both.

__

For the first parabola, the point of intersection is ...

  y^2 = 4(-y-1)

  y^2 +4y +4 = 0

  (y+2)^2 = 0

  y = -2 . . . . . . . . one solution only

  x = -(-2)-1 = 1

The point of intersection is (1, -2).

__

For the second parabola, the equation is the same, but with x and y interchanged:

  x^2 = 4(-x-1)

  (x +2)^2 = 0

  x = -2, y = 1 . . . . . one point of intersection only

___

If the line is not parallel to the axis of symmetry, it is tangent if there is only one point of intersection. Here the line x+y+1=0 is tangent to both y^2=4x and x^2=4y.

_____

Another way to consider this is to look at the two parabolas as mirror images of each other across the line y=x. The given line is perpendicular to that line of reflection, so if it is tangent to one parabola, it is tangent to both.

tim has 74 socks, that are white or black. he has 1 more pair of white socks than black socks. how many individual socks of each
MAXImum [283]

Tim owns 74 socks, the colours of which are unknown.

He does, however, have an additional pair that is white rather than black.

Therefore, it suggests that we are working with the two hues white and black.

The result of dividing the total number of socks by two is:

= 74/2

= 37 socks, two pairs each for black and white.

But let's not forget that Tim has a pair of white socks in addition to his black pair.

The total number of white socks is equal to= 37+1= 38 socks.

Total black sock pairs= 37-1=36 socks.

Last but not least, the question asks us to count the number of single socks rather than pairs.

For white then:

There will be = (38x 2) socks per pair.

= 76 socks

For Black

The individual socks will be = (36 × 2)socks

= 72 socks

We can then deduce that there are 76 individual socks for white and 72 individual socks for black.

<h3>How many pairs of socks must you take to find a matching pair?</h3>

The solution would have to be four. Despite the large number of socks in the drawer, there are only three different colours, so if you take four socks, you will undoubtedly find at least one pair that matches.
