Initially, red pandas were considered to be a part of the raccoon family, based mostly on the physical traits they possess. The red pandas were then thought to belong to the bear family, based on evidence of genetic similarities. It wasn't until extensive genetic testing was done that scientists realized they shared much of their genetic heritage with that of the Ailuridae family.

Therefore, we can confirm that through extensive genetic testing, scientists determined that the red panda belonged to the Ailuridae family, making them <u>its only living member</u>.
