I think that this is an easy answer. Men or women could always be abused physically, emotionally, or mentally. There could also be an age gap that could cause this to happen e.g. catholic priests and alter boys.

Depression is being sad, of course it goes deeper than that, but that's where the major depression comes in. Major depression includes signs of not having motivation, and constantly being sad.
