Rocky Mountains, and seek a westward-flowing river
to the Pacific Ocean—the fabled Northwest Passage.
2. Report on new animals, plants, minerals, etc. in
the newly-acquired regions.
3. Establish trade with the Native American tribes
they encountered.
4. Assure the Native Americans of the peaceful
intentions of the United States government.
