The people referred to by Dr. Oppenheimer as being "solemn" and "silent" MOST likely reacted that way because "thousands of people had just been killed in Hiroshima, Japan".

It was difficult for the people to believe that so many people were dead, so many were maimed, so many bright futures burnt to ashes and so many dreams lost.

At the same time, there is an indescribable feeling of relief for few people who were still alive.

What did president johnson's escalation of the Vietnam war and president nixon's involvement in covering up the watergate scanda
MissTica
The escalation of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal led to distrust among the public of the American government. Up until the 1960's and 1970's, Americans were typically approving of the government. They patriotically followed President Roosevelt into World War II and praised the government for helping them out of the Great Depression. The government played it relatively safe in the '50's and Americans didn't mind because they were experiencing great prosperity and didn't want to get involved in another major war. By the time the '60's and '70's rolled around, the Vietnam War was a source of contention because people didn't really agree with the war and the government began hiding information and lying to the public to maintain what little support they still had. The real hit came when Nixon became implicated in the Watergate scandal causing the public to mistrust the government even more. Both of these events demonstrated to the American public that the great leaders of America aren't as great as they're played up to be.

The issue that created the greatest political and societal division in america in the 1960s and 1970s was the? environmental mov
Liula [17]

The issue that created the greatest political and societal division in america in the 1960s and 1970s was the vietnam war.

What is vietnam war?

The Vietnam War lasted from November 1, 1955, to the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. It was the second of the Indochina Wars, and it was fought between North and South Vietnam.

The Vietnam War characterized 1960s and 1970s America, but by the most frequently accepted yardstick, it lasted ten years (and, officially, it was never a war at all). While World Wars I and II killed significantly more American troops, the conflict did not last a decade and a half.
