The people referred to by Dr. Oppenheimer as being "solemn" and "silent" MOST likely reacted that way because "thousands of people had just been killed in Hiroshima, Japan".

It was difficult for the people to believe that so many people were dead, so many were maimed, so many bright futures burnt to ashes and so many dreams lost.

At the same time, there is an indescribable feeling of relief for few people who were still alive.
