6. The addition of which of the following sentences would create an effective paragraph?
MA_775_DIABLO [31]

6. Fourth, the invitations should be sent.

The structure of the paragraph is organized as a numbered list that the host must do in order to have a great party. Each sentence that is part of the list begins with an ordinal number (first, second, third). It would make sense to have the next sentence begin with the word fourth. Also, the only thing left out to planning the party is inviting the guests.

12. C. I thought about what he'd said soon I realized he was right.

There are two independent clauses in this sentence: "I though about what he'd said" and "soon I realized he was right." These two indpendent clauses must be separated with a period or joined together with a semicolon or a comma and a conjunction.

14. Prewriting

John is doing some brainstorming of his topic ideas. Brainstorming is in the prewriting stage because he is still trying to figure out exactly what he wants his topic to be. The planning step would involve creating an outline.

15. The game will be called if the storm continues, the weather is dangerous.

This sentence is a runon because it has two independent clauses "The game will be called" and "the weather is dangerous". There is a dependent clause as well: "if the storm continues". The two independent clauses are only separated with a comma. This is not enough. There should be a conjunction as well as a comma or a semicolon.

Dennis_Churaev [7]

This question is missing the information in parenthesis. I've found the complete question online. It is the following:

What would be the right choice of pronoun for the sentences below from the choices in the parenthesis? Also what would be the correct antecedent from the choices in parenthesis?

1. Neither of the men has decided which team ________. (he prefers or they prefer) Antecedent (Neither, team, or men)

2. Each of the short story writers has a style of ______ own. (her or their) Antecedent (writer, style, Each)

Answer:

For number 1, the correct choices are "he prefers" (pronoun) and "Neither" (antecedent).

For number 2, the correct choices are "her" (pronoun) and "Each" (antecedent).

Explanation:

In colloquial language, we tend to not pay much attention to this, but when the subject of a sentence is "neither" or "each", we must use singular pronouns to refers to it. Since it is common for those words to be followed by plural nouns, we get easily confused, and end up using plural pronouns.

1. Neither of the men has decided which team... --> Who has decided? Neither. Therefore, "neither" is the antecedent. Since it is singular, we must choose the singular option, "he prefers".

2. Each of the short story writers has a style of... own. --> Who has a style? Each. I know it sounds strange on its own, but "each" is the subject. Since it is singular, we must use "her", the singular pronoun, to complete the sentence.
