The cyclops rolls a large stone over the opening each time he leaves, which was too large and heavy for Odysseus and his men to move. To get out Odysseus knew that he had to manipulate the cyclops in opening it for them without killing the cyclops, or losing too much men.

The movies and books are both great, but I think the books better describe her emotional attachment. In the books it describes their moments they have together and how comforting he was to her. In the movies, they leave out a lot of those little moments and you have to rely on the actress' performance to really see how Peeta effects Katniss.
