The civil rights movement was for the greater good, and it achieved a lot of what it proposed.

While discrimination in the United States has not ended, and injustices still happen, thanks to the civil rights movement, many forms of discrimination that existed before are now virtually unheard of, especially legalized segregation, which was widespread in the south, with jim crow laws, segregated schools, buses, and even drinking fountains.

Besides, the civil rights movement was non-violent, and showed the world that peaceful protests can have an effect on governments and help change things. This is the same philosophy that led Gandhi in India to achieve independence for his country from the UK.
