Since you have a multiply 2 and a divide 2, they cancel each other out (so you can remove both)
(1/2)^2 + 1/4 + (1/4)^2

Simplify both fractions with exponents
1/4 + 1/4 + 1/16

Add both 1/4
2/4= 1/2

1/2 + 1/16 = 9/16
