The Definitive Guide to Spanish Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns

“At the moment I’m struggling massively with Spanish direct and indirect object pronouns.” – Real Fast Spanish Subscriber.

This is a really common question.

Which makes sense because when you replace a Spanish noun with a direct or indirect object pronoun you have a lot of things to think about.

You have to consider sentence order, prepositions when you can and can’t replace objects, and a few special rules for combining direct and indirect object pronouns in Spanish.

What’s worse, sometimes Spanish natives will use a different pronoun to what’s written in the textbooks.

In this post, you’ll learn everything you need to know about Spanish direct and indirect object pronouns including what they are, how to use them when to use them, how to combine them, a rule you need to be careful with, and where Spanish natives get it backwards.

To start, let’s first discuss the concept of an object pronoun in general.

Explanation:

To figure out which pronoun to employ to replace a noun, you must first figure out what role the noun plays in the phrase. However, in order to employ a pronoun to substitute a noun that is the direct object of the sentence, you must first be able to identify the noun as the direct object of the sentence. The direct object is the person(s) or thing(s) that receive the verb's action. A direct object is not always specified directly in a statement. The direct object of the phrase is the response to the inquiry "Who or what is being verbed?"

A sentence's direct object

If a sentence contains a direct object, there is a very simple approach to identify it along with the subject and verb. It is a threestep process (the sequence is critical!) as follows:

1) To determine the verb of the sentence, consider what action is taking place. Your sentence's verb is that action term.

2) Consider who or what is to blame for the action. The subject of your sentence is the noun that answers that query.

3) Consider who or what is being "verbed." The answer to that question is the direct object of the sentence. Don't be concerned if you can't identify a direct object. There isn't one in every sentence.
