1. The South had much better leadership. The North had no one like Robert E. Lee. In fact, the Northern Generals were very timid about using what weapons they did have -- much to Lincoln's consternation.

2. The South had a much better Calvary and therefore greater mobility than the North  had at least in the beginning.
