Before, Plessy v. Ferguson decided that the idea of separate but equal was constitutional. This allowed for racial segregation across the nation. Some students were denied access to some public schools because of their race. Thurgood Marshall argued that separation creates inequality. The Supreme Court decided to overturn the precedent decision made by Plessy v. Ferguson and declare the idea of separate but equal unconstitutional. This would lead to schools no longer discriminating against students.
