The mongol empire held a bunch of land (most of Asia) during it's peak, but they also made trade routes and allow them to prosper under their rule.

The Mongol Empire destroyed states with their almost unbeatable army only one state was able to to beat them and increased connections between states through the silk roads which came about because of the amount of land the Mongols conquered.
