The Mandate of Heaven was the right to rule bestowed upon a Chinese emperor by Heaven itself. If an emperor was overthrown, it was interpreted as the need for a new emperor to take over and receive the Mandate of Heaven. The Mandate of Heaven was only bestowed upon virtuous and benevolent rulers; if they were not, the Mandate can be taken away from them and given to another ruler.
