The westward expansion era in the United States was one of great importance, as it helped to create the shape of the United States today. One of the reasons acquiring land was important was because it would help to complete America's manifest destiny. Manifest destiny is a term that states that it was America's god- given right to control all land from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. This belief that it was supposed to be America's land caused them to buy land (like the Louisiana Purchase from the French and Florida from Spain) and even fight for it (Mexican-American War- results in US getting Arizona, California, Utah, etc.).
Besides completing America's manifest destiny, acquiring this land allowed the US to gain significant natural resources. A perfect example would be in California. After gaining California from Mexico, gold was found. This lead to the California Gold Rush of 1849. Finding this valuable commodity lead to a huge increase in the population of California and it gave the American economy a boost.
Colonialism refers to a government policy in which a country establishes its power over other regions and territories. Imperialism is a similar practice, which occurs when a nation extends its rule over another country and people, most often through military, political and economic control.
The practices of colonialism and imperialism have led to a great variety of consequences, both positive and negative.The negatives usually included the death and abuse of indigenous people, or the depletion of natural resources. However, the positive ones often included growth and development.
For example, colonizers often brought new practices to the indigenous people they conquered. These practices often allowed for the development of more organized, more efficient or more stable communities. An example of this could be found in the Roman Empire, which spread Roman law over its conquered territories.
Another consequence is that of improved standards of living for most or some of the population. For example, the British government made some changes in India that improved the life of a large percentage of the population, such as the introduction of the railroad, schools, and better sanitation.

The true vision of Karl Marx about communism is something that objectively would never work in practice. The problem is that the human nature and the Marx's vision of communism are not going very well together. According to Marx, all people should be in the same hierarchical level, thus horizontal hierarchy. Everyone should be paid equally, no matter the type of job, and everyone should get the same services. There's no private ownership and the economy is totally controlled by the government in a manner to be self-sustaining. Big problem in these things is that the humans stride toward progress and success, so by putting everyone in the same basket the creative minds and the successful people are destroyed, while the lazy ones, and the ones that do not have great potential get the benefits without deserving them. The economy can simply not function in a manner to be self-sustaining, and it will always be on the verge of collapse, and there will always be huge problems with lack of food and products.
