A new school of painting known as Post Impressionism emerged in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The naturalism of impressionist art was being questioned by a group of artists. Rather than using impressionism's traditional optical impression, these artists took a more independent path to express their feelings in their work. There was a deeper meaning to many of their themes. There were also a few pieces with a more abstract feel to them. Van Gogh's Starry Night is a well-known work from this period.
