Sheriff Tate said that Bob Ewell killed himself and fell on his knife and that is how he died but the true version is that Boo actually did it to save Scout and Jem, but he didn't want people to know because he likes to keep to himself and didn't want to be known as a hero so that's why Sheriff Tate covered up for Boo and told everyone Bob killed himself.
