Well, to do that you need to take out the 23 to just leave 3x alone, "How do you take out the 23?" By doing the opposite to both sides. In this case, the 23 is negative, so we add 23 to both sides. If it was positive, you subtract 23 from both sides. Now that we have added 23 to both sides, we are left with 3x=36, "What do you do now?' We still do the opposite, this time we are multiplying 3 times X, and the opposite for this is division, so we have to divide 3 to both sides to leave X alone.
