Turner was a young boy in the US during the civil war time when he was facing difficulties in being accepted by society. Similarly, he was also having conflicts with his father as he always criticises him.

Therefore, he was feeling hopeless as he was NOT having any friends, as well as his family, was not concerned about his feeling which is making him depressed.
