Fresh waters are generally characterized by low concentration of  total dissolved solids and low concentration of dissolved solids.

An area that is covered with water either for varying parts of the year or throughout the year  at the  surface or near the surface is known as  wetland. These include lakes,marshes,swamps. Swamps and marshes constitute dissolved solids and constitute salt. Thus all wetlands are not classified as freshwater ecosystem.
