The second linked article describes the finding of a female Viking warrior. What items were found buried alongside the body of t

his warrior?
Why do you think that the scholarly community did not immediately come to the conclusion that the skeleton was a woman?
What evidence finally concluded that this warrior was a female?
Both the article on Amazons and the one on Vikings use discoveries in gravesites to connect myth to facts and develop a better understanding of women warriors. These discoveries threaten modern understandings of gender roles. Give examples from both texts that show how the gravesite discoveries tell a very different story from what society claims are the roles for men and women.
The title of this unit is “Warriors and Goddesses.” Nearly every warrior mentioned in this unit was female. Did you notice that as you read the unit? Did that surprise you at all? Would you have found it unusual if all (or the vast majority) of warriors discussed were male?

The items that were found buried alongside the body of the Viking Female Warrior were mostly weapons of offense. They are listed below.

What items were found buried alongside the body of this warrior?

The weapons buried alongside the body of the female Viking warrior are:

 • A sword
 • Amor piercing Arrows
 • A Battle knife
 • An Axe
 • A spear; and
 • two horses.

Why do you think that the scholarly community did not immediately come to the conclusion that the skeleton was a woman?

The Scholarly community did not immediately conclude that the skeleton was that of a woman because of the nature of weapons that were found beside it.

It was presumed that only males could have fought battles so intense it required the number of weapons that were buried alongside the skeleton.

What evidence finally concluded that this warrior was a female?

It took DNA testing /processing of the skeleton to arrive at an incontrovertible proof that the remains were that of a woman.

What examples from both texts show how the gravesite discoveries tell a very different story from what society claims are the roles for men and women?

The articles also refer to other archeological arguments such as that which was rebuffed by feminist researchers that man (that is the male man) was a toolmaker.

It is stated that the likelihood that these tools were made by women, but used by men is very likely.

It is quite a departure from the norm to have females as great warriors as that defies the male chauvinistic programming that society has fostered on itself.

It is usually commonplace for males to dominate conversation relating to war, warriorhood, and battles.
