The point that Amy Tan was trying to make in her example of her mother and the hospital is this:

  • The imperfect expression of language can limit the perception of an individual by others and the quality of services they receive.

In her reflective essay, "Mother Tongue", Amy Tan cited the example in the hospital where her mother was given a shabby reception by the staff because of her limited expression of the English Language.

It was not until her daughter Amy who spoke good English arrived, that she was attended to properly and assured that her concerns will be addressed.

In citing this example, Tan was showing the negative effects that could result because of having a limited expression of a language.

Language is powerful, so, a poor grasp of it can result in poor quality of services received and other limitations in life.

Is the sentence simple, compound, or complex?
muminat
This statement is a compound sentence since it has two independent clauses linked to each other by a linker. how to know? just remove the linkor and read each claue on its own. that'll be:
stephen plays the violin. marta plays the viola.
if the clauses are complete on their own (independent clauses), then the sentence is a compound sentence.

3. Compare the speaker in "Because I could not stop for Death" is somewhat passive.
mariarad [96]

Answer:

Dickinson would probably have been influenced by the people that she socialized with in her early years, the literature her father encouraged her to read, and news of the current events of her time. These factors would have shaped her views and the messages she wanted to communicate about life.

Explanation:

In "I could not stop for death" The speaker is dead. But the even cooler thing is that we don't know this for sure until the last stanza. So the speaker is a ghost or spirit thinking back to the day of her death. She's actually pretty calm about it too.
