No, today federalism is significantly different.

In the early days of the United States as an independent nation, the Founding Fathers decided to adopt federalism as a system of government. This because they wanted the states to retain their original powers and prerogatives, despite the creation of the federal government.

Thus, the federalism devised by the Founding Fathers was a kind of confederation in which each state retained its sovereignty.

Now, today we see a different federalism, where the federal government has an evident predominance over the states, which in turn do not have sovereign rights but a certain economic and political autonomy.
