A rectangular poster has an area of 190 inches squared. The height of the poster is one inch less than twice its width. Find the

dimension of the poster.

Set the height to h, and the width to w.

We know that wh=190 and h=2w-1.

Substituting 2w-1 for h, we have:

w(2w-1)=190

So:
2w^2-w-190=0

Factoring this equation, we get (2w+19)(w-10)=0.  The solutions to this equation are -9.5 and 10, but clearly the width must be positive, Substituting 10 for the width, we get 10*2-1=19 for the height.
