Answer:

(C) 245 miles

Step-by-step explanation:

We can view the starting and ending flight points as the hypotenuse of a right-angle triangle. Since the plane flew 125 miles south, the height of the triangle is 125 and we are given the hypotenuse as 275

If we designate the height as a and the hypotenuse as h, and the base as b then
h² = a² + b²  by the Pythagorean  theorem

or

b² = h² - a² ==> (h + a)(h - a)   {x² - y² = (x + y) (x -y)}

Substituting known values
b² = 275² - 125² = (275 + 125)(275-125) = 400 x 150 = 60,000

b =  √60000 = 244.94 and the closest answer is C: 245 miles

Derive the equation of the parabola with a focus at (2, −1) and a directrix of y = −one half.
yKpoI14uk [10]
Basically, the parabola has to have all points that are equidistant from the focus and the directrix, the directrix being a horizontal line, and the focus being a point given. To derive an equation from this you need to use the distance formula which I'm guessing you already know because you're already in precalc.
The gist of it is that we have a random point on the parabola (x,y), and the point (x,y) will be equidistant from both the focus and the directrix. If we use the distance formula, you get something like this:
\sqrt{(y-(- \frac{1}{2} ))^2} = \sqrt{(x-2)^2+(y-(-1)^2}
The square root of y-(-1/2) coming from the directrix, and the righthand side of the equal sign being derived from the focus.
All you need to do is simplify now!
<span>(y+\frac{1}{2})^2 = (x-2)^2+(y+1)^2 \\\ y^2+y+ \frac{1}{4} = x^2-4x+4 + y^2+2y+1 \\\ -y-\frac{3}{4} = x^2-4x+4 \\\ -y-\frac{3}{4} = (x-2)^2 \\\ -y = (x-2)^2+\frac{3}{4} \\\ y = -(x-2)^2-\frac{3}{4}
</span>
Hope I helped!

A flare is launched from a life raft with an initial upward velocity of 192 feet per second. How many seconds will it take for t
AVprozaik [17]
So you want height to be 0 so you plug zero into the height and solve from there. You subtract 192 from both sides to get -192=-16tsquared. Then you would divide by -16 and end up with 12 = t^2. Then you find the square root of 12 and get t = 3.464 seconds.
