The soil and climate in New England made large scale farming impossible

Explanation:

When the first settlers came to New Englad, they quickly realized that large scale cities woulnd´t be possible because they could grow enough food to feed them, so they had to settle in smaller towns, the climate and soil wouldn´t allow them to grow crops at a large scale, the winters were too cold and the summers too short, and most of the soil was too hard for farming.
