Chemical coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection are the five main unit processes (described below). As the water goes through the various treatment procedures, chemicals are added to it.

Coagulation. Coagulation is frequently the initial stage in the treatment of water.

Flocculation. Coagulation is followed by flocculation.

Sedimentation. Sedimentation is one of the procedures used by water treatment facilities to remove particles from the water.
