It is not so much the words that important by themselves. It is that paragraph uses parallel sentence structure to compare and contrast what will be done to maintain and uphold what our forefathers have accomplished.

It is a symbolic way to describe that the girl refuses to be a part of the society. The girls comparison of fur piece to the fried fish is a manifestation of the depressed state of mind. The boy and the girl can't seem to understand how anyone could wear fur. It shows that others have a difficult time relating to Mrs. bill.
