An elliptical galaxy contains billions of stars and has, but not limited to, the following characteristics:
i. it is mostly smooth
ii. it ellipsoidal in shape
iii. it is formed by a merge among smaller galaxies such that during the merging, a large percentage of the gas and dust in the merging galaxies is lost as it is thrown out into the emptiness between these galaxies thereby making the resulting elliptical galaxy barren and unable to form any new or more stars.
