It’s been a while since I did Math but, in most scenarios, when you solve for an equation with only 1 x variable and you substit

ute it back in, it should always be true and equal the answer in the original equation(?).
For this equation, the answer was x=7, but when I substitute it back in, I was unable to get the original solution back, which means it is “no solution” after all.
Why is that?

Let's replace every copy of x with 7 and simplify.

\sqrt{5x+1}+9 = 3\\\\\sqrt{5*7+1}+9 = 3\\\\\sqrt{35+1}+9 = 3\\\\\sqrt{36}+9 = 3\\\\6+9 = 3 \ \text{ .... note the 6 on the left isn't negative}\\\\15 = 3\\\\

Which is clearly false. This is probably the set of steps you followed to get "no solution".

Why is there no solution? Well let's subtract 9 from both sides to isolate the square root

\sqrt{5x+1}+9 = 3\\\\\sqrt{5x+1}+9-9 = 3-9\\\\\sqrt{5x+1} = -6\\\\

Recall that the result of a square root operation is never negative. The range of y = \sqrt{x} and y = \sqrt{5x+1} is the set of nonnegative numbers. There is no way we can have the left hand side result in -6

If there was a negative sign out front the square root and we have this instead

-\sqrt{5x+1}+9 = 3\\\\

then the answer would be x = 7

Unfortunately, there isn't such a negative sign, so we stick with "no solutions".

Write the equation of the line in fully simplified slope-intercept form.
Aneli [31]

Answer:

y = -\frac{1}{5}x -1

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

The attached graph

Required

Determine the line equation

First, list out two points from the graph

(x_1,y_1) = (-5,0)

(x_2,y_2) = (0,-1)

Next, calculate the slope (m)

m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}

m = \frac{-1-0}{0 -(-5)}

m = \frac{-1}{0 +5}

m = -\frac{1}{5}

The equation in slope intercept form is:

y = m(x - x_1) + y_1

This gives:

y = -\frac{1}{5}(x - (-5)) + 0

y = -\frac{1}{5}(x +5)

Open bracket

y = -\frac{1}{5}x -1

At a store, Lauren selected a watermelon that weighed 38.4 ounces.
Mrrafil [7]

Answer:

$3.60

Step-by-step explanation:

1.50 ÷ 16 = 0.09375

there are 38.4 oz in laurens watermelon, so multiply the cost per ounce by the number of ounces to find the answer

0.09375 × 30.4 = 3.6

0.02x + 0.10(400-x) = 0.42x can someone help me solve this I’ve been having different answers thanks
ArbitrLikvidat [17]
Simplify the left side. 0.02x+(40-0.1x)=0.42x
-0.08x+40=0.42
since 0.42x contains the variable to solve for, move it to the left side of the equation by subtracting 0.42x from both sides
-0.08x+40-.0.42x=0
-0.5x=-40
x=80
