Solidarity was founded on August 31, 1980, in the Gdansk Shipyard, when the Polish Communist government signed an agreement allowing it to function. Over twenty Inter-factory Founding Committees of autonomous labor unions mergedvat the convention on September 17, 1980, to become NSZZ Solidarity, a nationwide organization.
