An expanded definition is an important writing tool you will need if you are writing for a person who is not an expert or specialist in a particular subject. An expanded definition explains a complex or unfamiliar term to make it easier to understand which is important to effective communication. An extended definition may explain the word's etymology or historical roots, describe sensory characteristics of something (how it looks, feels, sounds, tastes, smells). It also may identify its parts, indicate how something is used, or even explain what it is not. It may provide an example of it, and/or note similarities or differences between words or things.

Jenny, who lives by Ben Franklin's <u>epigram</u>, "Early to bed, early to rise ,makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise," arrived at the flea market at six a.m. It took her two hours to find what she was looking for - a pre-Revolution Era silver dollar. A(n) <u>pensive</u> elderly woman sat behind the stand in the shade of a canvas tarp, reading a leather-bound novel.

"I'm sorry to <u>obstrude</u>, said Jenny, "but what are you asking for this odd coin?" The old woman looked up from her book, smiled and said, "Make me an offer." As an experienced <u>numismatist</u>, Jenny knew the exact value of the coin. She offered half, and Jenny was <u>elated</u> when the woman accepted her offer, without even having to <u>parry</u> endlessly   with her on the price.

When a statue of the town's founder was found knocked over, police attributed the vandalism to a group of <u>ruffian</u> roaming the neighborhood, however, after Inspector Curson <u>cogitate</u> for a few minutes while looking at the crime scene, she was able to disprove the officer's theory as to how  the event <u>transpire</u>. Only one person in town would have the gall damage the statue of the beloved founder, and the inspector knew why.
