Se×ually transmitted infections are defined as infections that pass from one to another person by means of Physical contact. STI caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), also increases risk of developing some kinds of cancer, such as cervix cancer.

The HPV interferes with communication mechanisms between cells, which leads to the proliferation of those cells in an uncontrolled way. These cells, if escaped by immune responses, continue to grow and form precancerous cells that can become cancer, if not treated.
