Full Question

Read the excerpt from part 4 of Zeitoun.

Zeitoun had picked up and dropped off friends and relatives at the station a handful of times over the years. Fronted by a lush lawn and palm trees, the Union Passenger Terminal had opened in 1954, an art deco-style building once aspiring to grandness but since overtaken by a certain grey municipal malaise. There was a whimsical candy-colored sculpture on the lawn that looked like a bunch of child's toys glued together without reason or order.

Why does the author include this description?

 • to present Zeitoun as a New Orleans resident and family man
 • to criticize the architectural choices in downtown New Orleans
 • to illustrate the grim, military realities of post-Katrina New Orleans
 • to show Zeitoun's discomfort in the grand downtown area.

- A proverb can give us insight, and it might teach a value.

7. Students once copied long lists of proverbs they memorized them.

- Students once copied long lists of proverbs. They memorized them.

8. Look for proverbs online, the library has dictionaries of proverbs.

- Look for proverbs online. The library has dictionaries of proverbs.

Explanation:

To answer the first exercise, all we need to do is look for the verb that agrees with the subject and that, and the same time, makes sense with the general context. For instance, if we had answered "A proverb contain simple and colorful language," we would have been wrong due to lack of subject-verb agreement (proverb is singular, but contain is plural).

As for the second activity, we need to correct run-on sentences, which are sentences where two independent clauses were joined incorrectly. For numbers 5 and 6, the sentences received a coordinating conjunction, which transformed them into compound sentences. Numbers 7 and 8 were punctuated in a way that separated the different clauses.

Pretend you are an advice columnist who writes a “Teacher Hotline” column for an educational journal.
Naddik [55]

Answer:

Explanation:

Hello, Discouraged Teacher,

I have had this problem with my peers before in my life, This girl kept on saying that I was annoying and saying I was always being rude, I pointed out that I just try my best, but she still didn't want to listen, we eventually took a break from each other.

Maybe instead of pointing out their weaknesses, go from a different angle. Instead of saying, Your doing this wrong and that wrong, maybe say that you can tell a student isn't doing too well and that you want to help in whatever way you can.

Hope this helps!

What emotion was the author trying to express?
Gennadij [26K]
I find the English translation extremely poor in beauty (although it is accurate) compared to the original. Wish someone could have captured their original beauty. The words in the original are so melodious... Anyone read any poetry of Mirza Ghalib? I love his work more than even Rumi's, though the two cannot be compared easily since their focus was on different things - Rumi is spiritual, Ghalib often sensual and tragic at the same time
