When a statement is said to have implicit meaning, it means that beyond what it literarily says, there is a hidden meaning to it.

What is explicit meaning?

Explicit meaning is the literal meaning of an information.

For example:

"The "climate" is hot in the office today.

 • "The explicit meaning is simply that there is need to cool the air in the office.
 • The implicit meaning could be that there is a lot of tension in the office today.

Why is it important to understand the difference between implicit and explicit meaning?

During communication, or in literature, the author is at liberty to communicate implicitly or explicitly.

Implicit means indirectly; while explicit means directly. In literature, the following figurative languages are considered tools of implicit communication.

 • Euphemism
 • Metaphors
 • Allusion

Conclusively, it is important to know the difference between implicit conversation or statements and explicit ones in order to understand the context or drift of a text or literature.
