Barry Goldwater was a Republican that ran for the party's ticket in 1964 so that he would oppose the Presidency of President Lyndon B. Johnson who was a Democrat.

Barry Goldwater was known for going against large corporations and trying to shore up support amongst the common people of the Southern and Western states.

Perhaps most controversial, was his support for the use of nuclear weapons in Vietnam which drew sharp criticism from many including President Johnson. He also supported more nuclear weapons to be built.
