Zelda Fitzgerald was the quintessential ""Southern belle"" during her youth. What is a ""Southern belle?"" How does it reflect c
dimulka [17.4K]

Answer:

A "southern belle" is a term that refers to respectable, elegant, and fashionable women- the epitome of desirable, and ready-to-be-wed in the 19th century.  These southern belles would belong to high society as they were expected to wed the most outstanding men back then. They would go from their parents house to their husbands' and were not expected to work but to be cared for.

The dramatic difference between northern and southern women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was that, whereas slavery was a driving force in the south, this same force was not encouraged in the north. In some way, northerners were more aware of the injustice slavery represented and did not depend on it but on themselves as providers and hardworkers. Therefore such terms as "southern belles" were not pursued. Women worked harder; they were becoming educated and wanted to make a difference and not to be "cared for".

What does "the finest slaves had taken to their heels" mean
nirvana33 [79]

Answer:

They ran away.

Explanation:

Read:

"Sometimes the masters thought they had heard the cry of a hoot owl, repeated, and would remember having though that the intervals between the low moaning cry were wrong, that it had been repeated four times in succession instead of three. There was never anything more than that to suggest that all was not well in the quarter. <u>Yet when morning came, they invariably discovered that a group of the finest slaves had taken to their heels.</u>

Unfortunately, the discovery was almost always made on a Sunday. Thus a whole day was lost before the machinery of pursuit could be set in motion. The posters offering rewards for the fugitives could not be printed until Monday. <u>The men who made a living hunting for runaway slaves were out of reach, off in the woods with their dogs and their guns, in pursuit of four-footed game, or they were in camp meetings saying their prayers with their wives and families beside them."</u>
