Dr. John B. Ellis, a "nineteenth century cultural critic," authored a book in 1870 criticising Noyes's influence on Free Love groups including "Individual Sovereigns, Berlin Heights Free Lovers, Spiritualists, Advocates of Woman Suffrage, or Friends of Free Divorce." He realised that their shared objective was to divorce. This, according to Dr. Ellis, is an assault on the current moral order.  [needs non-primary source] According to historian Gayle Fischer, Dr. Ellis also attacked Oneida women's attire, saying that their "healthful" uniforms failed to eradicate the "peculiar air of unhealthiness" that was caused by "sexual excess" on Oneida women.

  • John Humphrey Noyes and his associates established the Oneida Community, a perfectionist religious communal community, in the area of Oneida, New York, in 1848. The group thought that Jesus had already returned in AD 70, enabling them to establish Jesus' millennial kingdom and become sinless and faultless here on Earth as well as in Heaven (a belief called perfectionism). The Oneida Community engaged in communal practices such as group marriage, male sex continence, and communal ownership of property and goods.

To document the lives and history of the University, The Press collaborates with alumni, friends, faculty, and staff. Additionally, the Press creates research and general publications on Pennsylvania as a part of a land-grant and state-funded institution, all of which aim to promote a deeper understanding of the history, culture, and environment of the state.

Wallingford, Connecticut; Newark, New Jersey; Putney and Cambridge, Vermont all had minor Noyesian settlements. Except for the Wallingford branch, which was destroyed by a cyclone in 1878, all of the branches were shut down in 1854.
