Akrotiri was buried in a thick layer of pumice and ash around 1600 BCE after a terrible earthquake and subsequent volcanic eruption, which led to the exceptional preservation of paintings, like the Akrotiri Boxer Fresco, from several structures all across the town.

Smooth lime plaster was placed on the walls before being painted over to produce the bright frescoes that can be seen today. It's unclear whether the game was a contest or just a regular sport.
