In "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates, Connie represents the many drastic changes America was experiencing. Connie, like many women in that time period, were dealing with the movement of women's sexual liberation, feeling undervalued at home with their family, and were questioning their role in society.
