Dryfoos and Barkin highlight four main problems that affect adolescents and put youth at risk. These are:

Delinquency- increased segregation of African-American and Hispanic children in alienated neighborhoods leads to criminal tendencies.

Substance abuse- minimal involvement into the lives of teenagers causes teenagers to choose wrong paths.

Teen pregnancy- lack of care and support from parental figures are reasons behind teenage pregnancy in America.

School failure- they point out that school system fails to cater to the needs of the students resulting in significant number of dropouts every year.

In reference to these, Dryfoos and Barkin chart out prevention programs and various other strategies to help youth at risk.
