Making inferences is similar to using context in the sense that both involve drawing conclusions according to evidence that allows for implicit meanings. They also have to do with deduction and reasoning, and often lead the reader to have insights on what is being read. All of it happens due to what is on the text in an implicit way.

An example is on "Hatter's Castle", by A.J. Cronin. The hatter's wife dies of cancer, and we know both from the context (a household with an oppressive and mean husband and father figure) and by inference that it was that vicious man who caused his own wife to get such a terrible disease. Although it is a controversial issue whether one's psychologic state can lead them to have cancer, it is implicit it was exactly what the author wanted the reader to infer.
